Mrs. White’s Third Grade Class
Third Grade Factsheet
The 3rd grade year at Trinity Lutheran School is a year of change and transition for each child academically, socially, and physically. The year starts with your child as a primary student amd ends as an intermediate student. We strive to accomplish those things that go with third grade like

  • learning how God made us special and unique,
  • memorizing multiplication facts,
  • using cursive writing,
  • doing projects,
  • working independently, and
  • using reading to learn new things.

These new steps are approached with encouragement and support for your child to develop his/her God-given talents. I plan to work with you and rejoice with your though the school year.

Third Grade Goals

Reading for Grades 3 & 4

In reading, students will be doing both class reading, as well as independent reading.

During class reading time, students will read stories from the textbook as a large group, individually or in small groups. Students will also participate in book groups.

During independent reading, students will be using a notebook to keep track of their reading progress. The notebooks/journals will include:

  • A list of reading requirements
  • A reading list to record books read at home and at school
  • Independent reading letters or responses

Students will periodically turn their notebooks in for review by the teacher. These notebooks will serve as a communication tool between the student and the teacher throughout the year.

Independent reading grades will be based on the following:

  • Students will have the following independent chapter book reading requirements for each nine weeks:

    3rd Grade

    300 pages

    4th Grade

    400 pages

  • Students will complete independent reading letters. The letters will be assessed using a rubric similar to the one on the back of this page.
  • Upon completion of a chapter book, the student and teacher will meet for a Book Talk or the student will be given a mini report form to complete.
